Africa Corporate Governance Conference Calls On Boards To Lead, Challenge And Transform

The Institute of Directors of Zambia (IoDZ), in conjunction with ABEAM International, has called on African boards to strengthen accountability, embrace ethical leadership and take a more strategic role in navigating the challenges facing organisations.

Held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Lusaka under the theme “Redefining Corporate Governance: Strengthening Boards, Accountability and Ethical Leadership in Africa,” the 2026 Africa Corporate Governance Conference has brought together directors, governance professionals and business leaders for critical conversations on the future of governance in Africa.

Opening the conference, the IoDZ Executive Director, Ms. Nchimunya Michelo Silenga challenged boards to move beyond compliance and provide meaningful oversight, ask difficult questions and remain alert to emerging risks.

The morning sessions featured Amb. Mumba S. Kapumpa, SC, FIoDZ, on the role of the Board Chair; Prof. Mervyn King, joining virtually from South Africa, on leadership during a crisis of trust; and Prof. Esther Munalula, who explored real-world challenges in ethics and integrity.

With discussions also touching on AI, data governance, cybersecurity, sustainability and economic uncertainty, the conference is challenging directors to keep pace with a rapidly changing governance landscape.
